Laser Therapy

A cutting edge tool in pain management and healing.

Benefits Cold laser therapy harnesses the healing power of light to help your pet recover from injury more quickly. A veterinary laser focuses a beam of low-level light energy, or photons, on injured tissues. The light is absorbed at the cellular level, causing chemical reactions, or photobiomodulation (light therapy), that stimulate electrons and cause release of ATP, which is the main source of cellular energy. The additional energy allows cells to heal and repair themselves much more quickly. Specific cellular effects include:
  • Endorphin release
  • Vasodilation (i.e., enhances blood flow to areas lacking oxygen)
  • Increased circulation
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Decreased inflammation

Laser Therapy Candidate Since veterinary laser therapy is used to decrease inflammation and increase healing, any pet who can benefit from anti-inflammatory medications is a potential laser therapy candidate. Laser therapy is often prescribed with anti-inflammatory medications, but it is particularly useful for pets who cannot take medications, such as those with liver or kidney disease.
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Inflammatory nerve conditions
  • Bone fractures
  • Traumatic injuries
Laser therapy’s cellular effects can lead to a number of benefits, such as pain management, muscle regeneration, and wound and joint healing. These qualities make laser therapy a helpful treatment for many conditions, including: Conditions Treated
  • Ligament and tendon injuries
  • Muscle strains
  • Soft tissue wounds
  • Surgical incisions

What To Expect

During a laser therapy appointment, a handpiece, which emits the light beam, is moved over your pet’s body surface. Laser therapy is noninvasive and causes no discomfort. In fact, many of our patients find the treatments relaxing. The length of each session and your pet’s treatment duration will depend on their condition. For example, surgical wounds may require only a few treatments, to speed up the normal healing process, whereas chronic conditions, such as arthritis, may require regular treatments over a longer period of time.
